Can We Live Sustainably? An Overview of the Human Factor section of the Life Sciences Gallery

Can We Live Sustainably?Over the last 200 years, humanity has become a major global force, and our actions are upsetting the dynamic balance of many social and ecological systems. The Human Factor section of the Life Sciences Gallery looks at regional and global problems associated with human activity, and discusses potential solutions.

This Guide is dedicated to the late Dr. Stan Rowe who spent his life lobbying for commitments, actions, and a collective worldview that would move society onto a sustainable path. He believed that people cannot be separated from the living ecosystems that surround and flow through them. His book, Home Place, makes it clear that sustainability means working with the head, the heart, and the hands, and at all levels of social organization.

Common Marsh Plants of Saskatchewan: A Field Guide

Common Marsh Plants of Saskatchewan: A Field GuideThe marsh surrounding a prairie slough or shallow lake is an excellent place to find a great variety of wild plants in a relatively small area. Some of these float in and on the water; others grow under the water but are anchored by roots which penetrate the soil. Many grow in the shallow water with most of their foliage above the water line. Numerous other plants grow in the damp soil which surrounds the marsh. This booklet deals with some of the most conspicuous and typical aquatic, semi-aquatic and damp soil terrestrial wild flowers. It is hoped that a study of the plants illustrated and described here will be an incentive for many to locate and become familiar with the other species which thrive in a similar environment.
