Travelling Exhibits: Scotty the Travelling T. rex Reviews

Everyone wants to see him
Scotty is famous far beyond Saskatchewan’s borders.  He has even travelled to Japan, to be a part of a larger show organized by the National Science Museum in Tokyo.  He visited the cities of Nagoya, Osaka and Kitakyushu in 2005.

Accompanying Scotty on this trip was… well, a piece of fossilized dinosaur poop (called a coprolite).  This was not just any old coprolite, it was the largest known coprolite from any carnivore.  A poop to be proud of for sure!  You can learn more about this fossil here.

Scotty visits the old home places
The RSM is working to bring the mystery and excitement of the museum to everyone in the province.  It has been a long time, millions of years in fact, since anything like Scotty roamed Saskatchewan but now he is back.  Of course, he is not as lively as he used to be (which is probably a good thing).

Scotty travelled to La Ronge for a few months in 2005.  Then it was off to Prince Albert to be a part of the Discoveries Children’s Festival, wowing a crowd of 5,000 children, but that was just the beginning.  Here is what people are saying about Scotty’s visit to their communities:

Scotty visits Hershel
by Crystal Craig, Ancient Echoes Interpretive Centre
New glimpses of T. rex and it's world exhibit“We were really excited when Scotty arrived at our centre!  We had prepared the exhibit room for him but did not realize our doorway was not large enough to encompass all the parts of the skull.  We had to dismantle the doors to get Scotty into the room.

The Scotty display took up a large portion of the room with our local marine fossils surrounding him.  We were fortunate that this exhibit coincided with an ongoing excavation by the RSM staff in the ravine near our centre.  The combination of the two events enhanced the interest level in the exhibit.

We had approximately 600 people view the Scotty exhibit.  A lot of those were school groups.  People were amazed at the size of the skull and found the support material very informative.  The RSM staff would often help explain the material and answer questions.  We had visitors from a 200 km radius come to see Scotty and tour the excavation site.  This exhibit was a success and helped increase the profile of our palaeontology program.”

Scotty visits Pasquia Regional Park
by Susan Schroepfer, General Manager
“When the truck from the Museum in Regina pulled up to the Interpretive Center at Pasquia Park, two very excited museum employees came into my office to let me know that Scotty was here.  He was so big his head almost touched the ceiling; he barely made it through the door.  It was great to see the children be confronted with Scotty’s monstrous head.  Some were scared, but most of them were excited and happy.  A lot of people dropped into the Interpretive Center to see Scotty."

Scotty visits Saskatoon's Western Development Museum
by Corinne Daelick, Education/Volunteer Coordinator
Scotty at the WDM in Saskatoon “We told 487 Grade two students and 109 teachers and chaperones that Scotty is one of Saskatchewan’s “very earliest Pioneers” during our “T. rex and its World” program.  The program used the Scotty exhibit and an exhibit from the University of Saskatchewan called “Plant Species at Risk”, to teach children about dinosaurs and endangered species, their habitat and themes of extinction.  It was a great success!  We appreciated the opportunity to give children in Saskatoon and area a closer look at Scotty.”
