Sage Flats

Parts of southwestern Saskatchewan support plant and animal species that are rare or unique in the province. This diorama shows the West Block of Grasslands National Park near Val Marie.

Richardson's Ground Squirrels

Richardson's Ground Squirrels, or "gophers," are important components of the prairie ecosystem. They distribute plant seeds and aerate the soil and become food for many daytime and nocturnal predators.

The Sage Grouse is the largest native grouse in Saskatchewan, with some males weighing over three kilograms. Females like the one in this display often roost at the base of large sagebrush plants, camouflaged by their mottled plumage.
