Priceless First Nations Artifacts go on Display

A unique collection of First Nations artifacts has recently been put on exhibition in the RSM lobby. A Hudson's Bay Company Surveyor collected these beautiful objects while working throughout Saskatchewan and Alberta during the 1880s, and the first time we saw them, we knew we had something special. Not only are they elaborate and colourful, the artifacts were symbols of the power and status of those who earned the right to carry them. They won't be on display forever, so check them out the next time you visit the Museum!

There are two types of moccasins in this collection. Those with a tall, stand-up cuff have beadwork designs and colours that are commonly found in Blackfoot moccasins. Those that have a short cuff with a split tongue, are typical of Lakota and Assiniboin (Nakota) moccasins.

These maces were used in public gatherings such as council meetings and ceremonies to indicate the status, roles and responsibilities of the individuals who carried them.
