News Articles: First Nations Artifacts Stolen

Three pairs of moccasins and a belt with attached knife sheath and pouch from the RSM Ethnology collection were stolen on September 13 or 14 while on display at the Treaty Four Archival Centre in Fort Qu’Appelle, Saskatchewan. Please contact the Curator of Aboriginal History or the Fort Qu’Appelle RCMP detachment (306) 332-2222 if you have any information as to their whereabouts.

Moccasins (RSM# 165.6a,b/1176)


A slipper style of moccasin with a short stand-up cuff and a short rounded integral tongue. The moccasins are fully beaded with “stacked” diamonds (black and red) on the vamp, stripes of white, black, and green above the sole seam, and stripes of white, blue and black on the cuff, all on white beaded background. The opening is bound with red bias tape and edged with clear beads. The soles are very worn. There is a large section of beads missing on the back of the right moccasin. The numbers “170a/1181” and/or “1181” are written in ink on the inside of the moccasins.

Hard-sole moccasins with a bifurcated tongue and a short stand-up cuff. The vamp, heels and tongue are fully beaded, using lazy stitch, in geometric patterns on a blue beaded background. The rawhide soles are very worn.

Recovered and safely home

Moccasins with separate sole and one-piece uppers seamed at the heel, a square tongue, and a medium height wrap-around cuff. The vamp and heels are fully beaded, using tack stitch, in geometric patterns on white background. The cuff is unbeaded. The numbers “JB.57.147.4” and/or “957.147.4” are written in ink on the outside edge of each cuff.

Belt with attached knife sheath and pouch (RSM# 3.27/457)


Hide belt with metal buckle and thong ties. The attached knife sheath is bound with green bias tape. It is fully beaded in geometric designs of yellow, black, red, chrome, and light green on white beaded background, and has a fringe of white semi-tanned hide and tin tinkling cones. The small rectangular pouch has a large triangular cover with beading (white, blue, yellow, and chrome) along the edge, at the tip, and lengthwise down the centre. White semi-tanned hide fringes with tin tinkling cones are attached at the tip and the upper corners of the cover. The number “488” is written twice in ink on the back.
